But one pit-bull in particular is proving that with a little love, attention, and kindness, any dog can be man’s best friend.
Sean Stinchcomb, a musician from Baltimore, adopted his pit-bull, Delilah, from a shelter two and a half years ago, as the perfect Christmas gift to himself. Stinchcomb then began dating Jade Schraff, who is now his fiancée.
Since Delilah had been part of their lives since the relationship began, Stinchcomb made sure she was there to share one of their most important memories.
Stinchcomb and Schraff were on their way to celebrate mother’s day with family, when they stopped at a beach on the way.
Stinchcomb wrote a note with the question ‘Jade, will you marry my dad? Love, Delilah’ with ‘yes’, ‘no’, and ‘maybe’ check boxes. The note was slipped inside of a jewelry box.
“The idea was to give it to Delilah without Jade seeing, and then having Delilah drop it on the ground next to her,” Stinchcomb told the Huffington Post. “It didn’t go as planned because Delilah was too excited after running around so I ended up having to pick it up and hand it to Jade. At that point I got down on a knee and asked her to marry me. It was pretty funny.”
Stinchcomb is no stranger to adopting animals. He met and adopted Delilah from the Baltimore Bully Crew animal shelter, a non-profit organization with the slogan, “Fight Abuse Not Dogs!”
“I am 5’7″ and own cats so I’m the furthest thing from being manly. I just wanted to help a dog that needed a home since all of the animals I’ve ever owned have been rescued in one way or another,” Stinchcomb told the Huffington Post.
The couple isn’t sure what part Delilah will play in the engagement and wedding celebrations, but they are certain that she will be part of it somehow.
“Delilah plays a huge part in our relationship. Our definition of fun doesn’t really include going out anymore unless it’s for one of my band’s shows,” Stinchcomb said. “We typically base our free time around volunteering with Baltimore Bully Crew or doing things that involve Delilah.”
