Claudio Vieira de Oliveira is defying doctors’ predictions. The 37-year old accountant from Monte Santo, Brazil sees life from a different angle… literally. Claudio was born with badly deformed legs, almost no use of his hands or arms, and a neck that is folded back on itself, meaning that he views the world upside down.
However, this hasn’t dampened his outlook on life! Although doctors and other individuals told his parents not to feed him when he was a baby as they predicted he would die anyway, Claudio has thrived, graduating State University of Fiera de Santana as an accountant, and is also a motivational speaker.
Claudio’s mother tells the Daily Mail, “Claudio is just like any other person – that’s how he was raised in this house. We never tried to fix him and always wanted him to do the normal things everyone else does. That’s why he is so confident.”
Claudio can type and write using a pen in his mouth, and can independently operate his phone and computer. Although his deformation stops him from being able to use a wheelchair, he has special shoes that allow him to walk around on his own.
Doctor’s recently diagnosed Claudio with congenital arthrogryposis—a condition which results in very reduced mobility throughout individual’s joints, or in Claudio’s case, complete immobility.
“Throughout my life I was able to adapt my body to the world. Right now, I don’t see myself as being different. I am a normal person. I don’t see things upside-down. This is one of the things I always talk about in my interventions as a public speaker,” Claudio states.
