But one day in May of 2013, Billy was sitting on the sidewalk, waving his orange cup, hoping for a caring soul to spare any money they could. Soon, Sarah Darling, a married woman who lived just down the way, walked past Billy. Being the kind woman she was, Sarah dropped a dollar in Billy’s cup. What she didn’t notice was that her diamond wedding ring had fallen off and plummeted into the cup too!
Sarah left, having no idea that her ring was gone, but Billy noticed a little while later. As many other people would do, he took it to a jeweler to get it appraised. He could have gotten $4K, right there on the spot. He was ready to take the deal, but Billy realized, “No, this belongs to somebody else!”
He went back to the spot where Sarah dropped it and waited to see if she would return. A few days later she did return to try and recover her lost ring. Billy stopped her and told her that she had dropped it in his cup. He returned it to her and she thanked him. She put the story on the internet, and soon it became known nationwide.
Sarah and her husband started a fund to raise money for Billy. It didn’t take long before people touched by the story had donated a total of $183K. Billy, Sarah and her husband went on national TV to tell their story. Billy’s sister, whom he hadn’t seen in 16 years, saw him and found out he was in need of a home. She contacted him and offered him a place to stay. He took the offer.
Now, Billy Ray Harris has a roof over his head and a job. He was able to put his whole life together, just by doing one good deed.
