This morning today, someone marked “Groundhog Day” on the calendar. I like groundhogs. They have brown fur, four legs, a tail and a strong jaw just like Labradors like me. I did not know how a day could be celebrated for groundhogs. Sandy said that it has something to do with the winter season and how long it will be.
Winter is good like summer and more winter is good too. Even though Sandy thinks its too cold, I still swim every day in all the weathers and seasons. It is important, almost as important as treats.
I looked on the internets to find out about the calendar day of Groundhogs. I emailed Punxy Phil Groundhog, so I could ask him my very good therapy dog for humans questions like what kinds of treats he likes. His favorites are fruits and vegetables and leaves. I like leaves too. I messaged him to come visit the Smile TV office which is good for groundhogs.
Punxy Phil showed up in a hurry! We have some common webbed feet like mine. He gave me a treat and told me about the history of Groundhog Day. It is an old, old tradition that started with a hedgehog and turned into a groundhog. He told me, “Today was called Candlemas, and lots of people used to believe that it was the day when season changes were set. If it was sunny, and the groundhog saw his shadow, it would be a long winter. If it was cloudy, spring would come soon.”
That was a fun story, but I wanted to make sure there was no snow in my pool, so I went outside with him and stood over him so he would not see his shadow. It was very successful.
Then the sun came out, and I saw my shadow! “That’s okay,” said the groundhog. “There won’t be any snow in southern California this year!” It is fun to be a very good ground-dog for seasons. I will invite Punxy Phil, the groundhog, to come swim with me today. We cannot see our shadows in a pool anyway.
Are you happy that there are six more weeks of winter? Tell me all about it in a comment, or send me an email at email@example.com. If you have a history question for Punxy Phil (aka Bill), visit his web page on the internets!
