A few weeks ago, my brother asked me if I wanted to go to Las Vegas to see a band I’d never heard of. The band sounded intriguing, but what piqued my interest the most was taking a road trip with my brother, just the two of us. Honestly, it didn’t take much convincing to get me to agree to the 36-hour, fastest-trip-of-my-life mini vacation. The two of us hadn’t spent much time together over the past few years; with spouses, kids and life getting in the way. I was all in for the whirlwind trip that would potentially be filled to the brim with reconnection. The funny thing is if you would have told the 14-year-old me that I was going to spend a precious weekend with my little brother, I would have thought you were crazy. Who knew that years later spending time together would become something I looked forward to?
Last Friday at precisely 6AM, we jumped in the car and headed to Vegas. The five-hour drive consisted of listening to the band we were going to see, recounting endless childhood memories, and reciting lines from our favorite movie – Pee Wee’s Big Adventure. Of course there were a few impersonations of our wonderful dad in there too.
We laughed the entire way there.
Fast forward to the show later that evening. It was mind-blowing. The music was amazing and the performance was incredible. Most importantly, my brother and I were sharing a moment (insert ‘awww’s here). It was awesome to experience that event with him, and it will be a great memory for the two of us to share over the years to come.
The next morning, we hit the road again to head home. When he dropped me off, I had a hard time wiping the perma-grin off my face. This trip was a good reminder that I need to laugh A LOT more and make more of an effort to spend time with my family. Thanks for the great weekend, little brother!
