Has your mind ever flashed back suddenly to someone you haven’t seen or thought about in ages? Or has there ever been something you wanted to tell someone, but just couldn’t get it out? Well, that time may have passed, but say there was something you wish you’d said to someone else in the mists of time. What if you took that opportunity now? What would it look like?
Pick up a pen, pencil, or keyboard, and write! Yes write! It’s not hard; all it takes is a little effort, and it’s not as if you’ll have to invent metaphors of lightning bursting from your heart to fill the page with lyrics of love.
Starting is simple. You just start out with “Dear…” Heck, I’ll even write one with you guys.
Back when we were in second grade, instead of focusing on cursive writing or math, I couldn’t get my pre-adolescent brain off of you. I was far too shy to actually say “Hi” to you. It was uncool for boys to spend time with girls back then. I sometimes wonder what would have been different if I had walked up to you and learned your name. Maybe you wouldn’t have punched me in the arm that one time. There are moments when I still wake up reeling from that punch, but it only made me like you more. School years and girlfriends have come and gone, but you still pop up in my thoughts after all these years. Just wanted you to know.
So that’s my first letter, a letter that, just by writing it, has released a level of tension I didn’t even know I had. Give it a go! Write out a letter to someone you don’t know anymore, seal it off in a bottle and send it off to the ocean or fold it into an airplane and send it into a high wind to never be seen again. Say what you need to say, send the past on its way, and move along to sunnier horizons.
