You’re probably a lot more ethical than you think! It’s true, and I’m going to prove it to you and maybe give you a tip or two on how to live a cleaner, happier life!
What are ethics? It’s such a basic question, one that we all think we can answer, but nevertheless, I feel the need to define it. For starters, it’s a moral philosophy that encompasses the ethos or character of all of us as human beings, and just what exactly is right and wrong, good and evil, vice and virtue. Admittedly, it’s a very broad topic with very little in the way of right or wrong answers.
I know what you may be thinking. “How can there be no right or wrong answers about what is right and wrong!?” I understand that confusion; it’s why I’m writing this in the first place!
Society supposedly has an unwritten rulebook of ethics, but I think the problem lies in it being unwritten! Of course, we all know that we shouldn’t steal, cheat, do this or that, but what about the things that we all should do?
So here are my ideas for ways we can all put our best into practice!
- Treat others with kindness and respect, even those we don’t know!
A smile to a stranger on the street can have a dramatic impact on them, despite the fact that we ourselves may very well never see it firsthand!
- Seek and speak the truth.
I know that truth itself can be at times a very in-depth topic unto itself, but for the most part I think we can all get away with more truth and less of those little white lies.
- Compliment someone.
I know, it doesn’t sound like an “ethical” thing per se, but why not? Doesn’t it feel nice when someone just turns around and gives you a compliment out of the blue?
- Be patient with others.
In today’s fast-paced, technology-dependent landscape, it’s easy to get impatient with others, but we have to fight that impatience within ourselves. Be more giving and forgiving when it comes to others.
- Take a deep breath and say something that you love about yourself.
Is that ethical per se? Who knows? The fact of the matter is that we all too often beat ourselves up with each and every mistake, and we need to let go and give ourselves permission to accept just how awesome we are.
