To me, these simple words are far more than the sum of their parts; they are a creed of sorts, a belief that runs deeper than any river or stream in my heart of hearts, so to speak. Most of us don’t realize it, but our actions have several hundred, if not thousand, repercussions and effects on the world around us, most of which we will never directly see or experience ourselves but which can have a huge impact on those around us.
A single good deed oftentimes causes a ripple-like effect, much like the concept of Karma: what you put out into the world will come back to you. It’s an old-world religious belief from several ancient cultures, some of which make the claim that what you put out returns to you two- or even three-fold. While I can’t make any comments on the veracity of that aspect, why not let the change you put into the world today be a random act of kindness?
For those of you who don’t know what I mean by a random act of kindness, let me lay it out. Just keep your eyes, ears, and heart open, throughout your typical day-to-day life, and soon enough you’ll see someone in need of help. It could be a man down on his luck, hoping to have a scrap of food, or a blind man trying to cross the street, or even a coworker in need of some friendly chitchat to distract them from office work-itis (which I swear I don’t have, and neither do any of my coworkers).
That one random act of kindness, that moment of compassion shown to your fellow man in need, especially one you don’t even know, begins that ripple effect. I’ve always personally found that I feel good when I do good things for others, and you will too. And the person you helped will feel good and will likely pay it forward. Just taking a mere 5 seconds to help one person can change the world, for the world is full of people.
Like the old commercial says, when you do something good for someone, they’ll tell two friends, and then they’ll tell two friends, and so on (ad nauseam). That one act of random kindness you perform will affect more than just the random person in need; given enough time, it can affect the whole planet. It’s not a hard choice to make; just be positive and help others. Be that change you wish to see, and the world around you will be looking brighter and brighter all the time.
