Now I admit that I have said it before, but I feel the need to say it again. We all need to get out and about in this world of ours. Open those eyes, and aside from getting slightly blinded by the sunlight, you’ll be surprised by some of the things out there.
I’ll give you an example from my real life on an excursion to the local coffee shop just yesterday. I know you are not going to believe me, and unfortunately I didn’t have my phone charged so I don’t have the photographic evidence, but something miraculously, unbelievably strange happened.
I’m sitting at a table outside the shop, and I met an Elvis impersonator. I wasn’t in Hollywood, or even Los Angeles mind you. I was just sitting at a coffee shop in a landlocked portion of California suburbia and there was an Elvis impersonator who walked up to me asking if he could share the table. There was a fair amount of banter between the two of us over the course of an hour, and it was truly one of those days I’ll never forget.
But one thing I also won’t forget is how many people walked past without a second glance, absorbed in their cellphones, tablets, music players, and portable video games. I mean here I am sitting down next to a rhinestone cowboy sipping a thirteen syllable elaborately named coffee. It was like a scene from a movie and people were just practically blind to it! Don’t get me wrong, I had a blast, and so did a few of the other passersby who happened to pause for photographs (and this is really why we should all remember to always have that camera/phone charged, you never know what you’ll run into).
Am I saying that if you unplug from your devices and go to your coffee shop that you’ll get a chance to sit down with an Elvis impersonator? No, of course not; that’s kind of a once-in-a-lifetime type of thing unless you are an impersonator or you just happen to know one. But my point is that you’ll never know what’s around the corner, who will cross your path, or what opportunities you can miss if you’re distracted and not in the moment. After all we don’t have the luxury of a restart button this lifetime… or if you happen to have found one, could you give me that cheat code?
