While standing on the subway platform the other day waiting for the train to arrive I heard a less than melodic voice coming from the end of the platform. At first I thought it was a man singing (badly) as a joke. However, when I turned the corner I saw this petite man, crooked teeth, and guitar in hand. He was singing but it was no joke, he was giving it all he had.His eyes were closed as he swayed gently to ‘Imagine’ by John Lennon; his dissonant voice struggled to reach the microphone. However, in between the melody and his heartfelt interpretation I forgot about the fact that this man’s voice was less than classically beautiful – I just heard him sing. But It was beautiful. Beautiful how despite not having the best voice he gave it all he had and made it his own. He put himself out there despite possibly being rejected, heckled, judged, or worse. This single act of bravery made this man’s song one of the most beautiful I’ve ever heard, not in the classic way but in something deeper.
Is fear holding you back from trying something you love? Go ahead and try it! This man was not singing to please anybody but himself. And so it begins with you too!
