Welcome to the first blog for Smile TV. My name is Sandy Pedeflous and the concept of Smile TV first started in my head when I was about 12 years old. Every night I would watch my parents obsessively watch the 6:00 o’clock and 10:00 o’clock news. It was like brushing your teeth, you just never skipped this nightly routine as it would be improper and socially not conscious. Night after night they would watch and learn about the murders, crashes, accidents, fires, burglaries and abuse. The newscasters would casually bounce a little humor back and forth and throw in an occasional positive story as if to make up for the deluge of the repeated negative bombardment.
And it wasn’t just my parents but most people who owned televisions seemed to have this addictive need to watch the news as it was seemingly interesting and the only assumed intelligent way to get current information. At this time in the 50′s, 60′s and 70′s, without the internet, how else would you be informed except for the radio?
I remember wondering why the only stories covered were negative in nature and why people were so addicted to watching it. At the time I had already expressed an interest in tv/film production and shot and edited 8mm movies. I asked mom and dad why the news people didn’t feature happy stories instead. They replied simply, “because no one would watch it…..it’s kinda like a train wreck, you don’t love what happened but you still want to know all about it….”. I thought it was a bit odd but accepted that it made sense. I figured it would be cool to create a news show with positive stories but knew that no one would watch it.
Fast forward – todays world. With today’s technology, economy, social consciousness and the desire for positive improvements, the planet is now ready to watch a news formatted TV program that features happy news. Thus Smile TV is born – news with only stories that make you smile!
